Compare coffee roasters for cafés, hotels and small roasteries

In short: the choice is usually decided not by the machine but by the room. The circuit, the smoke and the building work rule out more options than capacity and taste do. So start at the top of the table, not the bottom.

What this page is, and is not

  • A way into four deeper comparisons. Every row in the table is worked through on a page of its own.
  • Competitors’ figures come from the manufacturers’ own pages, with dates. Where we lack a figure, we say so.
  • We build one of the machines. Every comparison says when another machine is the right choice.

The machines side by side

The infrastructure rows come first, because they decide whether the machine fits at all. Capacity, software and taste are worked through on each comparison page.

Figures for other machines are taken from the manufacturers’ own pages and verified on 18 September 2026. Prices and lead times change — ask for a quote before you do the maths. The capacity rows are on each comparison page, where the calculation is shown.

Which comparison should you read?

Four pages, four different questions. Choose the one closest to yours.

I don’t know whether my premises can take it

The most common question, and the one that stops the most projects. Eight points on the circuit, heat, humidity, fire and the authorities, with a premises check you can do yourself in a quarter of an hour.

A coffee roaster without a chimney: what your premises actually need

I am choosing between electric and gas

The technology choice, row by row: installation requirements, what has to be brought into the premises and what each option costs to keep running.

I am looking at a specific machine

Three comparisons against named machines, with the same rows in all three and a section of its own on when the other machine is the right choice.

I already run a roastery and need a sample roaster

A different question from the ones above: which sample roaster you need, and when you don’t need one at all.

The numbers behind the rows

Circuit, power, dimensions, clearances, water, chaff and network for our own machine are collected in one place, with what we have measured and what we have not spelled out.

→ Installation and technical requirements

And environmental rules, briefly: they depend on the country and the volume. In Sweden, for example, notification is only required above 100 tonnes of coffee a year, whichever machine you choose. Check the rules where you are. What a machine can remove is the chimney, the building work and the risk of odour counting as a nuisance.

When none of them is right

Three situations where a roaster of your own is not the answer, worth knowing before you read on:

  • Your brewing equipment is on loan against volume. Then the coffee contract is tied to the machines at the bar, and roasting is not the first thing to solve.
  • The volume is too small. If you pay less than about €14 per kilo today, the saving is too thin to carry an investment.
  • Contract roasting is enough. If you want your own coffee but not your own production, there are roasteries that roast your profile under your name.

Two ways forward

1. Talk about your choice

Tables decide whether the machine fits. A meeting decides whether it suits you — even if you end up with a different machine.

2. Buy or lease

If you have already decided: the machine can be bought today, delivery 3–6 months. Or write to us.

Frequently asked questions

Which coffee roaster asks the least of your premises?

Of the machines in the table, Science Brewing Roaster: 230 V single-phase on a dedicated 10 A circuit, no duct and no building work. Bellwether is also ventless but needs a dedicated 30 A circuit, which a typical café rarely has. Roest P3000 needs a duct and usually three-phase.

Why is 10 A enough for one machine and not another?

It comes down to how the smoke is handled. An afterburner has to heat the exhaust until the smoke burns, and that costs electricity. Science Brewing Roaster cleans in four steps instead — cyclone, water wash, HEPA and activated carbon — without an afterburner, and avoids that load.

Do you need an environmental permit to roast coffee?

It depends on the country and the volume. In Sweden, for example, notification is only required above 100 tonnes a year, whichever machine you choose. Ask your local authority.

Can the machines’ capacity be compared directly?

Only if the figures are calculated on the same basis. Manufacturers state theoretical capacity, and that figure assumes someone feeds the machine without a break. Ask instead how far the machine runs between two interventions. The calculations are on each comparison page.

Do you only sell your own machine?

We build one of them, and we say so plainly. Every comparison has a section of its own on when the other machine is the right choice, written to be useful even if you end up there.

Talk about your choice

Tell us what you run and which machines you are looking at. We will tell you what we know about them, even when the answer is a machine other than ours.
