Science Brewing Grinder
Whole beans in the brewer, weighed to the right dose
Science Brewing Grinder is grind-by-weight for batch brew and filter coffee. It grinds whole beans straight into the filter and stops at the right weight, for every pot and every airpot. For those who know whole beans make better coffee but have been missing a fully automatic solution for the brewer. Now it is here.
The essentials in 30 seconds
- Pre-ground coffee loses aroma from the first minute. Freshly ground in every pot is the easiest taste upgrade a café can make.
- The touch screen shows only the choices you have set, such as Pot and Airpot. Whoever stands at the grinder doesn’t need to know anything about coffee.
- The scale reads to 0.1 g and the grinder stops by itself at the target weight.
- Wi-Fi: profiles, logs and stock in the web app, updates over the network.
- Standard, Silent or just the base platform for a grinder you already have.
How it works
- Place the filter in the holder on the scale.
- Tap what you are brewing, for example Pot or Airpot.
- Press start. With auto-start on, just putting the filter down is enough.
- The grinder grinds and stops at the target weight.
- Take the filter and put it in the brewer.
The touch screen shows only the choices you have set, for example Pot 60 g, Airpot 125 g and Large airpot 225 g, or just a single choice. Anyone gets it right, every time.
The right dose and fresh coffee
How accurate it is
The scale reads to 0.1 g. For large filter doses the grinder runs in fast mode and stops within a couple of grams of the target. For small doses there is a precision mode that tops up with short pulses and ends within a few tenths of a gram. The mode is set per profile.
Fresh in every dose
If the coffee in the grinder has been standing longer than the time you choose, from 30 minutes to 48 hours, the grinder first grinds a small amount for you to discard. It can also be set to keep that amount and carry on grinding.
Connected
The grinder runs on Wi-Fi and is linked to your organisation in the Science Brewing web app.
Profiles remotely
Name, weight, mode, auto-start and freshness time are changed from the web app.
Grind setting on the screen
The recommended setting is sent along and shown on the grinder. The burrs are adjusted by hand.
A log of every grind
Time, profile, target weight and actual weight.
Roasted coffee stock
Every grind is deducted from stock, and you get an alert when it starts running low.
Updates over the network
New software is installed without the grinder being sent in.
If the grinder loses its connection it keeps grinding. The grinds are stored in the grinder and sent when the network is back. If you roast yourselves on Science Brewing Roaster, the roasted coffee goes into the same stock.
Sell freshly ground coffee in bags
Add a choice for the bag, for example 250 g, and sell freshly ground coffee to guests who want to take it home.

How long grinding takes
Grinder is built so you can walk away while it grinds, so speed is not the priority. Silent is quieter and grinds more slowly than Standard. The times are measured at customer sites. Grind size matters more than the grinder: a coarse grind for French press is faster, a finer grind takes longer.

Will your grinder work with the base platform?
The base platform switches the grinder’s power on when grinding starts and cuts it at the target weight. So the grinder has to start by itself as soon as it gets power. Two checks show whether yours will work:
- Unplug it while it grinds. Start the grinder, pull the plug and plug it back in. If it starts grinding again, it works. If it stays off until someone presses a button again, it does not.
- Check the current. The base platform controls the grinder through a 12 A solid-state relay (SSR). The grinder may draw at most 10 A while grinding, and preferably no more than 12 A at start-up. The rating plate shows current or power: 10 A at 230 V is about 2,300 W.
Grinders with a heavy motor that takes long to spin down keep grinding for a moment after the power is cut. It shows most on small doses. Not sure? Tell us which grinder you have when you order, and we check it before we build.
For roasteries
Roasteries can place Grinder with their own café customers and follow consumption per customer.
